MOMBASA, Kenya, Sept 3 – Kenya and Uganda will seek to address policy and mobility barriers affecting tourism and business travel between the two countries at a regional summit set for October.
The 5th Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism and Innovation Summit will be held from October 26 to 27 at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa.
The summit will bring together government officials, tourism operators, technology companies, investors and other private sector players to discuss ways of making travel and business between the two countries easier.
A key focus will be the implementation of Article 104 of the East African Community Treaty, which provides for the progressive removal of restrictions on the movement of people, labour and services across the region.
Participants will examine challenges facing tourists and business travellers and discuss measures to improve movement between Kenya and Uganda.

Technology and youth-led innovation will also feature prominently, with innovators expected to showcase digital solutions aimed at improving visitor experiences along the Uganda-Kenya Coast tourism corridor.
Other discussions will cover tourism investment, smart tourism destinations and connectivity.
Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Ambassador Herbert Kiguli, said the summit would focus on practical cooperation between the two countries.
“This Summit reflects the strength of the partnership Uganda has built with our friends on the Kenya Coast over the past five years. As we mark ten years of the Consulate’s presence in Mombasa, we are moving beyond dialogue to concrete, action-oriented cooperation,” Kiguli said.
He said technology and youth innovation would be important in expanding tourism opportunities between Uganda and Kenya.

Mombasa County Executive Committee Member for Tourism Mohammed Osman said the county sees opportunities in closer cooperation with Uganda, particularly through technology and youth-led initiatives.
“Mombasa County is proud to welcome this Summit as a platform that puts our tourism offering firmly on the regional stage. We see real value in deepening ties with Uganda, particularly in opening up smart, tech-enabled and youth-driven approaches to tourism that benefit both our destinations,” Osman said.
The summit is being organised by the Consulate General of Uganda in Mombasa in partnership with tourism stakeholders from Uganda and Kenya’s Coast region.
The annual meeting started in 2022 as the Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism Conference. More than 450 stakeholders have since participated in related familiarisation programmes involving tourism products on both sides of the border.

The summit is expected to produce a communiqué outlining agreed priorities and follow-up actions.
The 2026 meeting will be the fifth annual Uganda-Kenya Coast tourism summit and will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Ugandan Consulate’s presence in Mombasa.
