Uhuru rejects Ruto’s political sponsorship claims

NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 23 – Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has cautioned against labelling him a political sponsor, saying Kenyans should be allowed to make their own decisions on who to support.

Kenya’s fourth President said he did not want to be drawn into claims of sponsoring political formations, stressing that the choice of political leaders belongs to the electorate.

“I don’t want to be called a sponsor, honestly. I don’t want all these unnecessary issues. I have said that the choice belongs to the Kenyan electorate. There is no need to force any Kenyan to go to this side or that side. Kenyans will choose for themselves,” the retired President said.

The Retired President also opposed attempts to block political meetings, saying such actions risked taking the country backwards.

Uhuru said voters ultimately have the power to either give or deny politicians their support.

“I am asking political leaders to go to the people and campaign peacefully. This business of blocking others from holding meetings or doing this or that is taking Kenya backwards, and we want to move forward.”

“If you want votes, ask for them ask humbly. The people will give them to you or deny you. Even I asked for votes in the (2002 presidential race) and was denied. I went back in (2013 and 2017) and asked again, and I was given,” Uhuru stated.
