“Baba Did Not Lead Cowards”: Sifuna Vows to Stand Firm Amid Coalition Talks

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has declared Busia County as the party’s largest stronghold by registered voters, asserting that the county holds more ODM members than traditional Nyanza bastions like Siaya, Homa Bay, or Migori.

Speaking on Sunday, February 8, 2026, during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Busia, Sifuna dismissed claims that ODM’s influence is limited to the Nyanza region and reiterated his commitment to accountability and governance, even amid talks of a possible ODM–UDA pre-election arrangement.

“Nataka kama katibu mkuu wa chama cha ODM, niseme hapa kwamba Kenya mzima, the county with the highest number of registered voters who are ODM members is not Siaya, it is not Homa Bay, it is not Migori, it is Busia. Ndio maana tulisema tukianza hii vuguvugu ya Linda Mwananchi tunaanzia Busia,” Sifuna said.

Loosely translated: (As ODM Secretary-General, I want to state clearly that across Kenya, the county with the highest number of registered ODM voters is not Siaya, it is not Homa Bay, it is not Migori…it is Busia. That is why we chose to launch the Linda Mwananchi movement here)

Using the platform to confront critics, Sifuna asked Busia residents to confirm whether he should maintain his current political stance or change course, insisting he will remain firm unless party members instruct otherwise.

“Nataka mnipee amri kwa sababu nyinyi ndio wadosi wangu pale ODM, mahali nimeshikilia, niendelee hapo hapo ama nibadilike? Mimi nataka niape mbele ya Mwneyezi Mungu na mbele yenu kwa sababu nyinyi ni wadosi wangu, mahali nimeshikilia sibanduki, kwa sababu Baba hakulea watu waoga,” he said.

(I want you to give me orders because you are my bosses in ODM. Should I continue holding this position, or should I change? I make this pledge before God and in front of you: where I stand, I will not budge, because Baba did not lead cowards)

He further framed his defiance as loyalty to the party’s founding values and to the late opposition leader Raila Odinga’s long-held belief in speaking truth to power, even at personal risk.

“Baba alikuwa anasema kama ni kutuua watuue lakini tutaenda tuongee ukweli. Mimi mtu mmoja wakiniua mnaeza shindwa kunizika kweli? Hatutatishwa na mtu yeyote. Mheshimiwa Raila Odinga hakulea watu waoga, na Baba alikuwa anatuambia kila siku tuchunge maslahi ya mwananchi,” Sifuna remarked.

(Baba used to say, if we must be killed, so be it, but we must continue speaking the truth. Can anyone defeat me if I tell the truth? We will not be intimidated. Raila Odinga did not lead cowards, and he always reminded us to protect the interests of ordinary citizens)

The Nairobi senator also launched a pointed critique of the Kenya Kwanza government over rising living costs and policy confusion, citing the ongoing Grade 10 school uniform crisis as an example.

“Mimi siezi nyamaza kama Sifuna wakati ambapo wazazi kwa saa hii wanang’ang’ana kupeleka watoto wao wa grade 10 kwa shule. Wanaambiwa uniform walipe hadi shilingi elfu ishirini alafu serikali ambayo haijui kitu inafanya inatuambia yakwamba tupeleke watoto shuleni bila hata uniform badala wahakikishe yakwamba bei ya uniform inashuka chini,” he said.

(I cannot remain silent while parents struggle to send their Grade 10 children to school. They are told to pay up to Ksh20,000 for uniforms, yet the government, which seems clueless, tells us to send children to school even without uniforms. They should ensure prices are affordable first)
