Decades of unfulfilled promises are giving way to tangible development as the Mtangawanda–Siyu Road on Pate Island, Lamu East Constituency, undergoes a major upgrade.
The 15 km stretch, from Mtangawanda Jetty to Siyu Secondary School, is being constructed to full bitumen standard with modern drainage, culverts, kerbs, slurry seal, and road furniture.

Speaking on the project, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, EGH, said the initiative is part of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, aimed at ensuring no region is left behind.

“Under the leadership of H.E. President William Ruto, we are deliberately opening up forgotten regions and ensuring the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda is felt in every village, every island, and in every community,” CS Chirchir said.
The upgraded road will improve access to hospitals, schools, and security services for remote communities on Pate Island. It is also expected to boost tourism and local trade, unlocking the economic potential of the Coast’s frontier regions.
