High Court Rules John Chebochok Unfit for Public Office Over Kericho Sex for Work Scandal

The High Court in Kericho has declared UDA aspirant John Chebochok unfit for public office following his involvement in a sex scandal. In a judgment delivered on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the court ruled that Chebochok grossly violated the Constitution.

Chebochok previously faced serious allegations of sexual exploitation following a high-profile BBC Africa Eye investigation into the “Sex for Work” scandal in Kericho’s tea plantations. The aspirant allegedly demanded sexual favors from workers looking for jobs on the farms.

“The Court issues a declaration that the 1st Respondent violated Articles 10(2), 26, 28 and 73 of the Constitution and is therefore unfit to hold any public office in the Republic of Kenya, and;

“A declaration that the 1st Respondent is consequently ineligible to contest for any public office and is consequently barred from holding any public office,” the judgment read in part.

The judge also blocked his swearing-in as Director of the Tea Factory for the Ainamoi Zone. Furthermore, the Court ordered the Kenya National Human Rights and Equality Commission to investigate systemic sexual exploitation within the tea industry, fulfilling their mandate under Article 59 of the Constitution.

The Coalition Against Sexual Violence, which challenged his election following the exposé, celebrated the ruling. Meanwhile, political analysts questioned why President William Ruto permitted his UDA party to remain associated with Chebochok. These concerns intensified after Chebochok appeared among UDA aspirants at a State House meeting hosted by the president.

“What is more astounding is how someone [who was] filmed sexually exploiting vulnerable women can don the party colors of the president’s party, attend a party candidates’ conference, and be considered by the ruling party for public office,” journalist Ferdinand Omondi poked.

Former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba also called out Chebochok while criticizing the government. “You have seen that guy Chebochok with the UDA uniform in State House, yet we have watched how many videos of him during the Kericho Sex for Work scandal that was exposed by the BBC,” Orwoba noted.

“By the time I opened my eyes to realize that I could not fit in (Ruto’s government), I realized that I was the square peg in a round hole. You have to be a thief, a murderer, a crook, some stray creature, or a rapist to fit into this government,” Orwoba said.
