Martha Karua Slams SHA After Paying Ksh283,000 Out of Pocket for Father’s Care

People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has shared her recent struggle with the Social Health Authority (SHA) following her father’s hospital admission.

Speaking on Thursday, February 19, 2026, Karua explained that SHA covered less than 10 percent of her father’s medical costs. The PLP leader noted that she had to pay the remaining balance from her own pocket.

“My father was hospitalized last week, and his bill had accumulated to more than Ksh300,000. SHA only paid Ksh17,000 of the total,” she intimated.

Karua pointed out that gaps in the SHA health insurance scheme leave many families suffering. While she acknowledged her own ability to cover the bill, she noted that many Kenyans lack the means to do so.

“Right now, Kenyans pay a bigger percentage of the bills, which was different when we were still under NHIF. Why did the government move away from something that was working?” she posed.

Karua insisted that Kenyans must navigate a long, exhausting process to access SHA benefits or rely on high-level connections to get help. She also accused the government of prioritizing the wealth of a few individuals over the health of ordinary citizens.

“Don’t deduct our money, yet we cannot see where it is going. All we see is people getting rich, yet we cannot ascertain what businesses they are involved in,” the PLP leader stated.

Karua argued that the government essentially took a step backward by replacing the NHIF with the SHA.
